Tom, 44, an electrician in Sudbury, injures his back and can no longer do electrical work. Given his training and experience, he could work as a dispatcher for a utility company at about 70% of his old pay. His group LTD plan uses an own-occupation definition for the first 24 months and an 'any occupation' definition after that. What happens after 24 months?
Group LTD plans commonly pay for a first period (often 24 months) if the employee cannot do his own job, then switch to an any-occupation test: unable to do any occupation for which he is reasonably suited by education, training or experience. If he can work as a dispatcher, benefits may end. Assuming the initial definition lasts to age 65.
