LLQP Exam Format (2026): Modules, Questions, Time and Pass Mark
The Life Licence Qualification Program (LLQP) exam is the licensing exam for life and accident and sickness insurance agents in every Canadian province and territory except Quebec. The curriculum is set nationally by CISRO (the Canadian Insurance Services Regulatory Organizations), and each provincial regulator runs the exam sittings. As at 12 Oct 2026, the format below applies in every common-law province.
The four modules
| Module | Questions | Scored | Time | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Life Insurance | 35 | 30 (5 pilot) | 75 minutes | 60% |
| Accident and Sickness Insurance | 35 | 30 (5 pilot) | 75 minutes | 60% |
| Segregated Funds and Annuities | 35 | 30 (5 pilot) | 75 minutes | 60% |
| Ethics and Professional Practice (Common Law) | 25 | 20 (5 pilot) | 75 minutes | 60% |
A full life licence (life and accident and sickness) needs all four modules. An accident and sickness licence needs only the A&S and Ethics modules. Each question has four answer choices and one best answer, and each module is marked on its own: you pass or fail module by module.
How the curriculum is weighted
CISRO's curriculum gives each competency component a weight, which tells you roughly how many of the scored questions come from it.
| Component (Life, A&S, Seg Funds) | Weight | About how many of 30 |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Assess the client's needs and situation | 35% | 10-11 |
| 2. Analyze the available products | 30% | 9 |
| 3. Implement a recommendation | 25% | 7-8 |
| 4. Provide customer service during the coverage | 10% | 3 |
| Component (Ethics) | Weight | About how many of 20 |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Legal aspects of insurance and annuity contracts | 60% | 12 |
| 2. Rules governing the activities of life insurance agents | 40% | 8 |
What the questions look like
Almost every LLQP question is a short client situation: a named client, a few facts about family, income, coverage or investments, and one question. Many answer choices carry a reason ("Yes, because..."), so you have to know why, not just what. Some questions ask you to calculate a need, a tax amount or a future value. CISRO publishes a few dozen sample questions on its site; it publishes no past exams.
Open book, with a calculator
In British Columbia you get the CISRO exam reference material on a supplied tablet and a calculator, and nothing else. See Is the LLQP exam open book? for how to use the manual without running out of time.
